Flu

The flu, or influenza, is a common respiratory infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. Influenza refers to a group of highly contagious viruses that are easily spread through contact with infected surfaces and people. Coughing, sneezing, and talking are the easiest ways of spreading the flu.

Influenza is typically a low-risk condition, but it can cause complications in children under 5 and adults over 65.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Many people mistake the flu for the common cold. Although the symptoms are similar, flu symptoms occur suddenly and are usually more severe. Symptoms include:

  • High fever (over 100.4 degrees)
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Dry cough
  • Headache

The Quick Doc team can help relieve you of severe or intolerable flu symptoms. Quick Doc offers same-day urgent care services, with no appointment necessary.

How is the flu diagnosed?

Before you can begin treatment, your Quick Doc provider needs to diagnose your condition. Be prepared to discuss the signs and symptoms of your condition, as well as your medical history and any chronic conditions. Your provider conducts a physical exam to check for signs of the flu.

Your provider might also perform a rapid influenza diagnostics test using a swab from the back of your nose or throat. The rapid influenza diagnostics test produces results in about 15 minutes.

How is the flu treated?

In most cases, the flu clears up on its own. Rest and plenty of liquids are typically enough to help your body fight the infection. Over-the-counter cough, cold, and flu medications can be used to ease your symptoms while you recover.

Antiviral medications can also be used to limit infection and aid in recovery, but they are most effective when taken within 48 hours of your first symptoms.

How can I prevent the flu?

When it comes to fighting influenza, prevention is your best option. In addition to practicing proper hygiene and being mindful during flu season, the flu shot is the best way to protect yourself against influenza.

The flu shot is designed to protect you against the strains of the flu that you’re most likely to encounter that season. Quick Doc provides a number of essential vaccinations, including yearly flu vaccinations.
